1960, January. Longview, Washington. Edwards marries Marlene Harmon again in Longview Washington for the benefit of Marlene’s mother.

1960, January , Portland Oregon. Edwards was on parole out of Deer Lodge Prison, Montana in 1960. He was living in Portland, Oregon on probation, married to Marlene Harmon, and traveling the country killing people, portraying himself as a family man. By the end of 1960 he will make the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List. He was suspected in a lover’s lane double murder.

1960, April 16. McAllen Texas, Sacred Heart Church, Easter Saturday. Edwards kidnaps Irene Garza. She is an attractive religious beauty queen. She had gone to the church for Easter confession at 7:00. Father John Feit hears her confession and last sees her at 7:30. Her car is found two blocks away from the church. She is found 5 days later drowned in a canal, beaten in the face and possibly sexually assaulted with altar candles. Police drain the pond and find a photograph viewer. Police receive an anonymous letter claiming that the viewer is owned by Father John Feit, the last priest seen with Irene before her death. The note states “This viewer belongs to John Feit (Order of Mary Immaculate,) of San Juan, Texas. It was purchased in Port Isabel, Texas, in July 1959 at Freddie’s Professional Pharmacy. Terms – cash. Price – I don’t remember. April 29, 1960.” This information – that Feit’s slide viewer was found near Garza’s body – was not made public during the initial investigation of the murder. Edwards was directing the police towards Father Feit just like he did with Burton Abbott in 1956, by planting clues to lead the investigation. He will lead a trail of corn to be followed.

1960, April 19th. McAllen Texas. Iren Garza’s purse and shoe are found on the side of road.

1960, July 9th. Portland Oregon. Edwards marries Marlene Hayworth/Harmon in a Catholic Church.

1960, November 26-27, Portland, Oregon. MURDER Larry Peyton and Beverly Allen on a lover’s lane. Edward detailed arriving at the scene of this double murder in his book

1960, November 28th. Portland Oregon. Edwards caught at the scene of a the Larry Peyton Beverly Allen double murder. Police question him but let him go.

1960, November 28th. Portland Oregon, Astoria Oregon. Edwards blows up Navy man Wayne Budde (Johnny) with a bomb

 

 1960, December 9, Portland, Oregon. Edwards arrested on parole violations and suspected in double murder. He escapes the Portland jail and flees with his wife Marlene Harmon for a year, traveling everywhere under assumed identity.

1967, February. Lewisburg Federal Prison. Edwards is moved to Lewisburg Federal Prison and allowed to be out in the community. He was teaching first aid training classes, preparing for his future Parole. He had served 5 years of a 15 year sentence for bank robbery. He was informing while in prison and released 10 years early on Parole.

1967, March. California. Charlie Manson. Released on Parole and starts Helter Skelter

1967, September 20. EDWARDS RELEASED FROM LEWISBURG PRISON ON FEDERAL PAROLE UNTIL 1977.

1968, June 24th 25th. Cross Village/Goodhart, Michigan. Edwards was released 9 months earlier on parole. Edwards plans and carries out the The Robison Family of 6 Murder Edwards targets and kills 6 family members in a quiet wealthy neighborhood. Mr. Robison was a Publisher- Editor of Impressio Entertainment Magazine.

1968, July 20th. Akron Ohio. Edwards marries Kay Hedderly. They stay together for 43 years while Edwards portrays himself as a married family man killing people everywhere.

1968, August 19th. Portland Oregon. Multnomah Sheriff’s Office reveals Secret indictment charging Robert Brom, Ralph Jorgenson and brothers Carl and Ed Jorgenson for Edwards’ November 27, 1960 Lover’s Lane killing of Larry Peyton and Beverly Allen. Edwards will start killing in the Zodiac in 4 months.

1968, November. San-Francisco, California. Charles Manson is paroled in 67 and moves to Spahn Ranch. He begins planning his Helter Skelter in November, 1968. Ed Edwards starts “The Zodiac” and kills in Charley Manson‘s backyard. Manson and Edwards knew each other.

1968, December 20. 1968. Vallejo, California. The first Zodiac Killer Killing. Edwards approaches two parked on a lover’s lane in Vallejo. He kills them shooting the female victim 5 times in the back.

1969, January 7th. Deer Lodge Prison Montana. Frank Dryman is released from Deer Lodge Prison on Parole to Vallejo, California. (Absconded Parole from 1970 until 2010, pictured below)

1969, March 31. Akron Ohio. Edward’s first child, April is born March 31st. Edwards’ mother was born on April 1st. He had hoped his first daughter would be born on April 1st. Edwards would ritually tie his killings to April 1st, throughout his life.

1969, Akron, Ohio. Edwards has all his teeth removed. Edwards wife Kay confirmed it in a 2010 interview.

1969, July 4. Benicia, California. The Second Zodiac Killer Killing. Edwards kills on 4th of July. He taunts the police with this phone call. “I want to report a double murder. If you go one mile east on Columbus Parkway to the public park, you will find the kids in a brown car. They were shot with a 9mm Luger. I also killed those kids last December. Goodbye.”

1969, July 31st. Edwards sends his first Zodiac Killer letter

1969, August 4. San Francisco, California. Edwards as the Zodiac sends the debut letter.It is sent on the anniversary of Edwards’ mother’s pending death. It contained a three part cipher sent to San Francisco Examiner, Chronicle and the Vallejo Times. When solved it stated:

1969, September 27. Lake Berryessa, California. The Third Zodiac Killer Killing. The next Zodiac killing occurred on September 27th, 1969. This date was the wedding anniversary of the Robison’s who Edwards had killed them and their 4 children one year earlier in Michigan. The victims in this Zodiac killing were Cecil Shepherd and Bryan Hartnell. They were picnicking on a secluded beach along Lake Berryessa, celebrating their graduation. Cecil had noticed a man approaching them. He disappeared down a draw, but suddenly re-appeared. Disguised in a black hood, his chest displayed the sign of the Zodiac, the cross and circle. He was carrying a gun, and had a knife on his side. A knife was attached to his belt. He made Cecil tie up Bryan with precise cut lengths of rope that he had brought with him. During the process, he conversed openly with the couple, telling them: “I’m on my way to Mexico–I escaped from Deer Lodge. I want your car keys–my car is hot. I killed a guard while in prison and I’m not afraid to kill again.”

Edwards left Bryan Hartnell alive to describe the entire incident. Bryan gave police a detailed description of the man. “He was barrel-chested, 5 feet 8 to 6 feet tall, dark-haired and heavy set, wearing a dark jacket and dark clothing that seemed sloppy and disheveled. He appeared to be in his thirties and fairly unremarkable. He ducked between some trees and emerged about 20 feet later. He was wearing a black hood that was well sewn and had the Zodiac’s signature cross and circle on the front.” Everything matched Edwards. 13 years earlier, Edwards had been in Deerlodge, stole a car, attempted to escape and had gone to Mexico. He matched every aspect of the composite drawing:

Edwards calls the press and demands to talk attorney to F Lee Bailey or Melvin Belli.CALL TO TV STATION OCT 22, 1970Â Edwards used the name “SAM” because F Lee Bailey had represented “Dr. Sam Sheppard” after he was convicted in 1954 of killing his pregnant wife Marilyn. Edwards was the real killer.Dr. Sam Sheppard received a new trial and was acquitted September 8, 1966with the help of F Lee Bailey. Edwards was released from prison shortly after and started “The Zodiac.”

1969, November 7th. Baltimore, Maryland Edwards kidnaps Sister Catherine Ann Cesnik.

1969, November 27th, State College, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania State University College Library. Edwards kills 22 year old Betsy Ardsma (BA) on the 9 year anniversary that Edwards killed 19 year old Beverly Allen in Portland, Oregon. Betsy was stabbed once in the heart in the university library the day after Thanksgiving, 1969. AÂ suspect was seen and told a clerk that “That women may need help.”
